Feeling Bored, Will McKay and How to Find a Calling
(An Interview with Richard J. Moore)

Experience with Drama (before junior year):

"Very little … I was in two … two plays: one in fifth grade, one in uh … one in like fourth grade. That was it. Uh I had took … Well, that doesn't really count … I took a ballet class when I was like in like second grade …"

The First Tryout:

"What made me do it? Will McKay! Cuz I was … I was uh … I was thinking about trying out just because I decided I needed to do something. Football season … Football season was over and I was really bored … I was like 'what the hell?' maybe … maybe I'll think about trying out for it. And then the uh … thuhhhhh … like the week before tryouts or whatever … I … Will … I was talking to Will about it and I was like ya know what I'm probly not gonna do it and Will McKay's like, 'NO! You have to do it!' And then he was real forceful about it, like he'd bug me every day … yell at me every day ….When I got called back, that was sweet! No, but the first … the first it was like … it was cool, I was like pretty nervous … just the first time I had ever done it plus the fact that you were auditioning in front of like … other students, like Garth and Kate, they were the directors, and they were there for the callbacks and auditions … so it was kind of uh … kind of weird like having them around and stuff like that … uh … plus, it was … I … I was … I was really aggravated during it cuz Mr. Samuels* … is a big asshole. And … Like during the whole audition, he was just like chilling, with his feet up on the desk, kinda like staring out into space … and it … that … that didn't like … it didn't like make me nervous or anything, it's just kinda made me angry … He was … He was like the … the you know, the head casting guy, and he's just like fuckin' around … It's disrespectful."

The Second Tryout:

"I was more relaxed going in. Well, first of all we didn't have to have a prepared monologue, they gave us one. But, I was more … I was more relaxed going into the audition, until … well, until they made us sing … Then I fuckin' flipped out. That's … that's j … That's different. [But] SiNG! was fuckin' sweet! At SiNG! … I'd say SiNG! is by far the most enjoyable thing, I … I've ever, like done, like as like a group … thing. Like football … football's fun. But that … that's a game, it's not like work and stuff … It was great."

Drama Outside of the Theater:

"OK … So like … When I like … It seems to me like when I like see like … like … like a performance or like the movies or like just like stuff in general … hello? You still there? Oh. I … I j … I just kinda like uh … I just … I don't know … I … It just seems to be easier to like … to judge. L … Like b …b …before, it was hard for me to say if I didn't like something. Like, I … I don't know why, but I c … I just like it was difficult to like say why … I … if I didn't like something. Like I was like, 'Oh yeah, that's good, ya know, whatever …' but now I … I like … There's a bunch of movies I've seen that suck! And I can … I c … I can be like 'Yea, That sucked!' and I … I … like I know why ….Through acting, I'm … I'm not … I'm not such a big pussy anymore … Like, before I couldn't like stand up in front of people and speak at all … I'd just start like twitching like convulsively or something, and not … and not know what the fuck I was saying, and now I can actually like talk to people and like I'm a lot calmer when I'm talking at a different speed. Also … I … I c … I can talk easier about certain things, like certain things that are kinda difficult to talk about … I find it's easier to talk about now, then … prior to this …"

Drama's the Thing:

"Right now? Yea, definitely. [Drama's my thing.] But it's weird though, like … like the kids in my class who are like, cuz I'm taking one theater class, which is a prere … prerequisite for like … You can … You can only be in this class if you're taking theater as a major. Alright? So these are like the kids that are like the theater majors and stuff like that, and I'm completely different from every single one of them! Like I wanna do theater and drama things, but I'm not like a … I don't consider myself like a theater person. Like all … all these kids are like weird and shit. Well take like our discussions in class. Like she'll ask all these … these like thought provoking questions that I just wanna be like, 'Yea, ya know, that' I just think that that's ridiculous, because … that's just stupid, I mean look at it, it's common sense. And ya know, one of these kids answers, 'Uh … You know … It's so beautiful … and … and ya know, fairylike …' and I'm just like 'Shut the fuck up!' …I'm an actor, too. I'm an actor. I'm not in theater, I'm an actor. Actor extraordinaire."
